LIGHTNING MAKES ITS MARK IN 2008 NY METRO BASKETBALL
TREMENDOUSLY SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR LIGHTNING TEAMS

All of the results have not been reported as yet but the news thus far is really impressive. Long Island Lightning continues to earn its place as one of the most competitive AAU organizations in the country.

This past weekend three of our Girls teams won the Division l NY Metropolitan AAU Championships. The newly formed 9U squad coached by Ken Lynch went 4-0 to capture the championship of the top division in this age group. The 10U team under the direction of Rich Slater and Pete Gilbert  defeated a nationally ranked Rockland Rockets team to capture their first championship and a bid to the AAU National Championship Tournament. Our 13U team team coached by Dennis Nuss captured the District Championship for the third consecutive year and will be heading back to the National Championship where they hope to better their fourt place finish of last year.

On the Boys side, our 15U team coached by Pete Gilbert emerged as the surprise of the year. They went 6-0 in the 15U Division ll District Championship and will play a very strong Mount Vernon team on Championship Monday for the title. They also have earned a bid to the National Championship tournament. Our 17U teams coached by Chris Kelly and Rich Silverstein also earned National Championship bids this past weekend in a highly competitive Division l Qualifier. Kelly's team reached the semi-finals before losing to the NYC Gauchos in  very close game. Tom Ahern's 13U team also reached the semi-finals of the District's Division ll qualifier. They went 4-2 for the weekend and also qualified for the Nationals.

Three of our Boys teams also won tournaments this past weekend. David Rothman's 14U team continues to impress by going 5-0 and capturing the championship of the highly competitive Spring Hardwood Classic in Westchester. The championship is the second of the still young season for Rothman's 14U squad; they opened the AAU season by taking home the Brewster Yip-Off Classic title in late March. Rothman's 12U squad also brought home gold by going undefeated and winning April's Hooperstown Jamboree.  Warren Wagner captured the 12U title at the Nothing But Net event in Elmont. Tom Baierlein's 10U team won their first championship ever at the Spring Hardewood Classic. Tom has brought this youn squad a very long way in less than two seasons. The 16U team coached by Orlando Cooper and Dave Nelson won the Spring HArdwood Classic by going undefeated in a very competitive event.

Congratulations to all our Lightning teams!

Richie Harkins Realizes a Dream

He has played for Lightning since he was 10 years old. His dad was his coach. His mom was always a quiet spectator. He always loved the game and worked extremely hard to improve his skills. He would help his dad with individual instructions at the Island Garden. Even now, he comes to Island Garden at closing time to take another 300 jump shots. He closes the building so that he can get that extra practice time.

This week was an incredible chapter in his basketball life. He played in the New York State High School Championship Tournament in Glen Falls where his team, Lutheran High School, went to the finals before being defeated by a much taller and more athletic opponent. He was named to the New York State All Tournament Team on Sunday. Yesterday, he accepted a college basketball scholarship to Adelphi University. Not bad accomplishments for 48 hours!

Richie Harkins is not the tallest or strongest player to ever come out of Lightning and Island Garden. He may be, however, the hardest worker. He has taken his love for the game to a level that we can greatly admire and respect. Richie certainly is a role model for all of those athletes who have to work harder than the other more physically gifted players.

We in Lightning and Island Garden offer our congratualions to Richie and wish him well in his college career. Also, we cannot forget his dad and mom, Billy and Janet, who gave so much of themselves to help Richie get to where he is today.
