Existing teams will be looking to fill open spots and we will be forming new teams at each age group if we are able to recruit capable coaches. All tryouts are held at the home of Lightning, Island Garden Basketball Arena in West Hempstead. Tryouts for high school players will be held at the conclusion of the season in February. The fee for tryouts will be $10.00. All players must have a copy of their birth certificate and proof of grade. The AAU season begins in March and continues into June. There is a fee associated with playing for Lightning if you are selected for a team. That fee varies depending on the team for which you are selected (in general fee could range from $600 to $900 depending on the schedule and other factors). AAU is for the serious player who wants to improve their skill level and one day aspires to play at the high school and college level. Practices are held once once or twice each week beginning in mid-March. Games are played only on weekends at various sites throughout Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area and on occasion out of the area (generally for the older teams). We will have teams for players at the Division l, ll and lll levels. The current skill level may not be the deciding factor as to whom will be selected. Coaches and Board Members will base the final decision on a number of factors including but limited to potential, experience, availability and priority of basketball over other sports. As is our policy, we do not turn away any child under the age of 14 who wants to be part of Lightning. If the Lightning Selection Committe decides that a spot cannot be made available to a player, that boy or girl will be guaranteed a place in our very well respected Developmental Program which is run by Tim Capstraw and Bill Harkins. The Developmental Program offers top instruction by two outstanding and highly experienced coaches. It generally attracts players who cannot make the full committment to AAU travel basketball. That program meets once each week at Island garden during weeknights. If you have any questions, please call Jim Fox at 516-292-4956. We are interested in only the serious and dedicated players.
